In the fulfillment of the objects of the Technical Universities Act 2016(Act 922), to provide higher education in engineering, science and technology based disciplines and vocational education and training, applied arts and related disciplines leading to the award of degrees including honorary degrees, Higher National Diploma, diplomas, certificates and other academic qualifications, Accra Technical University has created a high quality of diverse middle level management personnel trained and equipped with knowledge and skills who easily fit into the competitive industrial environment contributing to Ghana’s development.

Accra Technical University offers and lays the foundation for future success by developing the information resources that students will make do with, while in the institution. We are being innovative in the face of reduced funding, to develop ICT facilities and also computerize our library facilities so that information can be accessed from varied sources electronically. Our expectations: students should take advantage of our resources and develop themselves in the three overlapping areas of life; the academic, the career and the personal.

The academic activities are performed by three (3) schools, which are, Engineering, Applied Sciences and Arts, and Business and Management Studies. The three Schools are made up of fifteen (15) Departments, offering six (6) Bachelor of Technology; fifteen (15) HND programmes and other several diploma and certificate courses.

The Bachelor of Technology qualification is designed to develop the skills, techniques and knowledge of HND graduates in specialized fields, who have acquired sound theoretical and hands on knowledge, are capable of critical thinking and practically competent. The programme, usually of an eighteen or twenty-four months duration, confers on students a high level of technical ability, conceptual knowledge and certified skills in a wide range of strategic and tactical programmes of study.

Our three year HND programmes are career focus and characterized by pedagogical/andragogical competence, students accomplishment and professional development and scholarship. The HND programme course focus is to develop a symbiotic relationship between tertiary education and the labour market needs and provide high level occupational preparation in a more applied and less theoretical approach — hands on! We believe our kind of education equips our students with a lifelong learning, creative opportunities and training experiences which support the development of self reliant graduates.

The programme is devised to give students the opportunities of considerable practical work experience, a significant degree of strategic thinking as well as supervisory capabilities in complex and changing contexts. The courses’ activities are mainly self-directed, requiring a high level of organizational and resource management skills which allows the individual to assume full accountability for their own learning processes and outputs of others within broadly defined boundaries.

  • To impart first class practical-oriented tertiary education in students in the fields of study.
  • Develop the desire in individuals for self enhancement in order to appreciate the importance of continuous learning.
  • Equip entrepreneurs and middle level managers with a wide range of sophisticated management skills; to enable them utilise acquired specialized skills practically to perform better in world of works.
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage in skills development, high – quality applied and market-driven research and publication of research findings.
  • To promote innovative and entrepreneurial culture and exploitation of ideas from commercial application.
  • To provide leadership and direction among students.
  • To recruit and develop qualified personnel for all positions in the institution in line with the Human Resource Policy.

The original idea of producing a crop of technicians to serve the emerging industry in Ghana, then at the inception of technical and vocational education has been maintained though Polytechnic education has seen leaps and bounds in its transformation into higher education of teaching, learning and research.

We continue to offer tailor-made programmes for technical and vocational school graduates as well as professionals, especially in the engineering field. There are six to eighteen months certificate programmes accredited by various bodies such as the Ghana Technical Education Unit and NACVET.
