A dazzling display of creativity and innovation took center stage as final year students from the Department of Fashion and Textile Technology at Accra Technical University hosted a remarkable fashion show on August 20, 2023 at the National Theater. The event, which served as an academic requirement for the HND students, was a testament to the knowledge and skills they had acquired over their three years of study.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, opened the event with an inspiring address. He emphasized that the fashion show was a showcase of the students’ competency-based training, highlighting the distinctive and creative designs as proof of the university’s effective teaching and training methods. “Accra Technical University has much to offer,” he added.

The fashion show, which featured 364 students specializing in fashion design and textiles, demonstrated an impressive flair for sustainability. Students incorporated recycled materials such as sacks and cement papers into their designs, sending a powerful message about the importance of eco-conscious fashion.

The overarching theme of the fashion show was “Think Global, Wear Local: Propelling the Wheels of Creativity Through Fashion.” This theme encouraged students to explore the rich tapestry of Ghanaian culture while infusing it with contemporary trends, resulting in a stunning array of outfits that celebrated the country’s heritage.

Notable guest in attendance included Dr. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA). In his address, he proposed a collaboration between the Fashion and Textile Technology Department and other universities in the country, suggesting that the department could produce apparel for various academic institutions.

Dr. Mawutor also encouraged the final year students to explore government interventions aimed at assisting entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses, reinforcing the idea that their creative skills could lead to successful entrepreneurial ventures.

Among the esteemed guests were the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science, Dr. Vivian Biney-Aidoo, and the Head of the Department, Mrs. Catherine Adu, along with dedicated lecturers and project supervisors who guided the students on their journey.

The event also attracted political figures like Mr. Nii Notey, the MP aspirant for Koley Klotey Municipal Assembly, as well as proud parents, guardians, relations, and friends of the final-year students. Their presence added to the jubilant atmosphere, as they cheered on the students who had not only showcased their talents but also sent a powerful message about the future of sustainable and creative fashion in Ghana.
